Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days

Neon Genesis Evangelion Angelic Days Volume 4

I’m a big fan of Evangelion. Rather than buy the regular manga, I’ve been collecting the Angelic Days books. Angelic Days is sort of an alternate version of Evangelion. All the characters are there, but the scenarios and circumstances are quite changed. Shinji, while still introverted, is not his manic depressive self here; Rei is a cheery transfer student, while Asuka is far less overbearing and obnoxious, doesn’t boast, and always tries to help people when she can.  She’s still liable to fly into a rage at a moment’s notice though. Yui isn’t ‘dead’, and works at Nerv with Gendo – both of whom live at home with Shinji (when they’re not working that is). Asuka’s parents both work at Nerv too, but they are never shown.

The story is based on the part of Episode 26 where Shinji sees a much happier world than the one he knows, where Misato is his teacher, and Rei is a new student. Angelic Days starts off almost identically, but then grows into something much more. Volume 4 recently popped through my door, and some bizarre things happen in it.

It’s really interesting to see these characters in a different light, especially Rei Ayanami, who is completely different from how she will always be remembered. Also, the story focuses a lot more on the ongoing relationships between the children (Kaworu included), rather than over the top action, which is still there in good supply.

The only thing that I’m not 100% keen on, is the actual artwork. Maybe it’s because i’ve been spoiled by too much Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, but Fumino Hayashi’s work can sometimes be a little off-putting – especially in direct comparison, and more so during the action scenes where it’s often difficult to see what’s going on. This is really a matter of taste I suppose, and it really is just a minor complaint. I’ve enjoyed all the books so far, and look forward to volume 5.

  3. […] of that is my collection of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days which I’ve blogged about here. It’s interesting, but I don’t own a single book of the original manga series. Not yet […]
