I <3 Neon Genesis Evangelion

Asuka Model

See that model? One day it shall be mine. Oh yes. I recently started collecting Neon Genesis Evangelion models and figures, just because I like the show so damn much. So far, I’ve only got a few gashapon figures and 1 Asuka figure that’s about 8” or so in height, but you’ve got to start somewhere right?

It’s kind of interesting how I became interested in Eva in the first place…

It was around 1994. I used to read this magazine called Nintendo Magazine System, which was the official Nintendo magazine in the UK. Each issue, they would have a brief segment where they’d talk about new anime (or ‘manga’ as they and everyone else in this country habitually call it). For some reason, I remember specifically the name Neon Genesis Evangelion, and a single picture of Rei Ayanami, along with some text saying something about the main character always being depressed even though he’s surrounded by ‘cute girls’.

I was never really into anime. Mostly because I wasn’t really exposed to it as much as I’d have liked. Nevertheless, I’d always keep hearing about Evangelion. I’d always keep seeing pictures of Rei and Asuka, keep hearing about how revolutionary this anime was supposed to be. One day I decided to read up on it more closely. I checked the Wikipedia entry, and from then on , I knew I had to take the next step: actually go watch the damn thing!

Rei, Shinji, Asuka

And so, over 10 years since that first time I heard about Evangelion, I was about to watch an episode. But not just one, all 26 of them! For whatever reason, I ordered the entire Platinum Edition boxset online without having seen a single episode. I felt somehow that I wouldn’t be disappointed, and I was right. I loved it (well, maybe not the last 2 episodes, but that’s a different matter entirely). Not long afterwards, I bought the movie, End of Evangelion, and I loved that too.

Evangelion may be 10 years old, but it’s not dead. 4 new movies, Rebuild of Evangelion, should be released over the next few years. I hope they don’t mess with the formula too much. However they turn out, I’m sure they can’t be as bad as the proposed live-action movie would likely be. That would just be wrong.

  3. First experience with Eva, huh?

I remember mine: It was 1998 and I was 7 years old. Living in Australia at the time, I only got exposed to Bishoujo Senshi SM and Poketo Monsters – aka Pokemon (such a sad life). The first episode I saw was when Eva 01 turned into a predator and started feeding on Zeruel; I was so addicted to the fluid animation and that coward pilot’s personality that I had to keep watching. Though the show was intended for older teens and up, this series appealed to me more than any other media.

  4. I would like to know who made that figure that is one of the best likenesses of Asuka out there, the detail is far greater.

  5. I believe it is sculpted by Yamamoto Kurisaru (D-SPEC), produced by Alter.

At least that’s what Google tells me 🙂
